Using photo voice to capture youth experiences of the NS School Lunch Program

The Context
Nourish Nova Scotia’s goal with this initiative was to highlight the positive impacts of the Nova Scotia School Lunch Program, to celebrate its successes, and to grow the number of students and families involved.
We engaged students from four schools across Nova Scotia in a method of story capture called photovoice, where students used cameras to capture and share their perspectives on things that matter to them about the School Lunch Program. Afterwards, they created a summary to share their stories and participated in a discussion facilitated by school staff to discuss the stories behind the photos they took.
Our Work Together
Our team was responsible for creating a structure for the project and supporting facilitators to lead the activity in each school. Some components of the project included a rigorous process for gaining parent and student consent, building relationships with facilitators to lead the in-school activity and creating written guides to support the process. Finally, our team was responsible the collection and synthesis of the photos, drawings, and/or stories collected from youth.
